THE Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) has gone from flagging only vegetables from Spain and Germany to flagging greens from the rest of the European Union (EU).
The widening of its 'hold-and-test' requirement comes on the heels of a deadly E. coli outbreak in Germany, thought to be spread through contaminated cucumbers imported from Spain.
The 'hold-and-test' procedure refers to the practice of sending suspected items for tests and withholding their sale until they are found to be free of contaminants.
On Sunday, the AVA had said it would place imported leafy vegetables, cucumbers and tomatoes from Germany and Spain under hold-and-test, but it has since confirmed that cucumbers from Germany, Spain and Denmark are not brought in here.

Some, however, do come in from the Netherlands; between January and last month, 69kg of cucumbers were imported.
Yesterday, the AVA spokesman said: 'In view of the recent situation, AVA will place imported leafy vegetables, cucumbers and tomatoes from the EU under hold-and-test, should there be such imports.'

A 23-YEAR-OLD man went to the dentist to have his teeth straightened, but emerged two teeth short - teeth that should have been taken out from another patient.
It was a case of a mistake compounded by another mistake at the National Dental Centre (NDC), in an incident which has landed a dentist in the soup, and earned the young man free corrective treatment.
The May 2007 incident - the first such case to come to light here - began when the clinic clerk put the chit for extracting two teeth into the wrong patient's file, and the wrong patient was called into the treatment room.

Dr Debbie Hong Pooi Mun, then four years into her career, failed to check the identity of her patient before commencing to extract the teeth. She wrongly took out the upper left first premolar and lower left second premolar.
The Straits Times understands that the patient was not under general anaesthesia; however, he said nothing when the first tooth was taken out.
When the error was discovered, he was informed within the hour. Although three senior NDC specialists were immediately called in, attempts to reimplant the two teeth failed.

Jharkhand Academic Council

Around 69.31 per cent students passed out in 2011 Jharkhand Secondary Examination Board results, announced Tuesday in Ranchi.
Jharkhand Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Baijnath Ram released the results at Jharkhand Academic Council on Tuesday.
Anjali of Hazaribagh district topped the list by securing 91 per cent marks.
A total of 3,54,802 students appeared in the examination in the state. Outshining girls, a total of 1,89,946 boys passed as compared to 1,64,680 girls.

Palamau district topped in all 24 districts of the state, with 80.76 per cent students passing in the examination.
In 2010, 74.37 students had passed the intermediate examination of the state.

Mhada Lottery Result 2011

Around 4,034 Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority (MHADA) flats will be sold through an online lottery on May 31, 2011.
The lottery draws will be declared today and can be checked at http://mhada.maharashtra.gov.in/.
The Bombay high court, in an interim order had directed the MHADA authority to keep out 1% of the flats, which would be around 40 flats from the draw of lots.

These flats are situated at Sion, Malwani, Ghatkopar, Versova, Vikhroli and Magathane in Borivli, Mumbai.
These flats will not be considered in the lottery draw, till the government takes a decision on increasing the flats meant for the disabled from the existing 2% to 3%.
May 16th was the last date for filling up the application forms for the housing lottery.
Last year, a 90 day period was given for filling up the MHADA application forms, but this year, since the process was made online, only 20 days was given to submit the application forms.
