Pocahontas

Emmetsburg's Lady E-Hawks improved their season mark to 2-1 with a 16-3 win over Pocahontas Area/Pomeroy-Palmer Tuesday night in five innings of play. The Lady E-Hawks' pitching staff would share the victory, as Faith Schmidt and Ashton Connelly split the duties in the winning effort.
Emmetsburg got off to a big start after going down two outs in the top of the first inning Tuesday night, as Morgan Vlasman got on base with a single and came around to score on a double from Faith Schmidt. An error on Miranda Vlasman's at-bat allowed Schmidt to come home before a single from Jayme Penrod scored Miranda Vlasman. Penrod would also scamper home after a double to the left field fence from Whitney Kibbie, who would be stranded to end the inning off a fly out by Kinsey Anderson. The Maidens would put a runner on base in the bottom of the first after being hit by a pitch from Schmidt, but left the runner stranded to end the frame.
With a 4-0 lead, Coach Travis Birkey's ball club didn't let up. After a fly out from Kaity Degen, Aly Berven had abase hit and was later joined on base by Morgan Vlasman off an error. A single from Schmidt would load the bases before Miranda Vlasman's single scored Berven. An error in center field allowed both Morgan Vlasman and Schmidt to plate their runs before the at-bat ended.
The Maidens were retired in order in the bottom of the second inning, giving Emmetsburg the 7-0 lead to start the third inning.
After a quick line drive out for Kinsey Anderson, Kaity Degen delivered a base hit that dropped into a gap. Aly Berven added a single before Hillary Pico came up and got her first hit of the night, a double that scored her two teammates. Pico would come home on Morgan Vlasman's sacrifice fly for a 10-0 lead with two outs. Faith Schmidt tagged a single, and courtesy runner Kayla Goeders would come around to score off a double from Miranda Vlasman.
A walk for Jayme Penrod left courtesy runner Hannah Bird and Penrod at the corners, but the duo were stranded when Whitney Kibbie was put out at first. Emmetsburg quickly sat the Maidens down in the bottom of the third for the 10-0 advantage.
The Lady E-Hawks offense cooled in fourth, as they went down in order off a pair of strikeouts and a fly ball. Ashton Connelly came in to pitch in the bottom of the fourth for Emmetsburg and the Maidens collected their first hit of the contest, getting a single that would turn into a run after a sacrifice and a wild pitch to cut Emmetsburg's lead to 10-1 when the inning ended.
To start the top of the fifth, Hillary Pico led off with a single and was followed by a double from Morgan Vlasman that brought Pico over the plate. Pinch hitter Jacque Carlson stepped up and belted a double that scored Vlasman's run and then came around to score her own run off a single from Miranda Vlasman. An error on Jayme Penrod's at-bat put two Lady E-Hawks on the basepaths and a sacrifice fly from Whitney Kibbie allowed Vlasman to plate her run. With just one out, Kinsey Anderson also issued a sacrifice fly to score Penrod's run before pinch hitter Teegan Olson hit a fly ball to end the at-bat.
Emmetsburg settled in to play defense with a 16-1 lead. With Connelly in the circle, an error put the lead off batter on base and a single would put two runners on the basepaths. After a strikeout, a wild pitch and the third Emmetsburg error of the game allowed two runs to score for the Maidens, but Connelly ended the game with a pair of strikeouts for 16-3 win.
Faith Schmidt went three innings with no hits and six strikeouts, while Ashton Connelly threw two innings, allowing two hits for three runs with five strikeouts.
The Lady E-Hawks got a double and two singles from Miranda Vlasman and Schmidt, while Pico and Morgan Vlasman both added a double and single. Jacque Carlson tagged a double along with Whitney Kibbie, while Aly Berven had two singles and Penrod and Degen both added base hits to the winning effort.
